GEO & SEO Analytics Are Here: Track AI Crawlers, LLM Referrals, and ChatGPT Ads in BuddyStat
Search is no longer the only discovery channel that matters. Every day, people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini questions that used to be typed into Google — and the answers are built from the content AI engines crawl, index, and cite. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making sure your site is the one AI assistants choose to answer from.
Today we're announcing two big additions to BuddyStat that bring this AI-driven world into your analytics: a GEO & SEO dashboard that shows exactly how AI engines discover your content, and OpenAI ChatGPT Ads support through a dual-layer pixel + Conversions API.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the set of practices that help your content get referenced by AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews. Where SEO optimizes for ranked search results, GEO optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers.
The mechanics are simple: AI assistants don't browse the live web for every answer. They rely on AI crawlers — bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Bytespider — that fetch your pages ahead of time, plus LLM referrals, where a real visitor clicks through from a chat answer to your site.
You can't improve what you can't measure. That's exactly what the new GEO & SEO dashboard gives you.
What's new in BuddyStat
1. A dedicated GEO & SEO dashboard
Open GEO & SEO from the sidebar and you get a single view of your AI-driven visibility:
- LLM referral visits — sessions referred from AI chat surfaces like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot
- AI crawls — requests from AI crawler user agents, so you can see exactly when and how often each bot visits
- Pages cited by AI — the distinct pages AI search and retrieval bots crawl, i.e. the pages most likely to appear in AI answers
- Verified crawls — AI crawls whose provider was corroborated by ASN evidence, not just the user-agent string
- Unique AI IPs — the distinct IP addresses AI crawlers use to reach you
Below the overview you'll find charts for AI crawls over time, a top crawlers breakdown by bot, provider, and crawl purpose, the top LLM referrers, and the top pages cited by AI.
2. AI crawler classification you can trust
BuddyStat resolves every AI crawler to a canonical name, provider, and purpose:
| Purpose | Meaning | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Training | Content ingestion | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Bytespider, CCBot, Google-Extended |
| Search / retrieval | Drives AI answers + indexing | OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot |
| Agent | Direct assistant browsing | ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Cursor |
| Preview | Link-unfurl / OG-card fetch | Link previewers |
A crawl is marked verified when the request's ASN belongs to the same provider the user-agent claims (for example, OpenAI's own ASNs). This separates real AI crawlers from spoofed user agents — so your AI visibility numbers are trustworthy.
3. SEO: organic search + AI indexing in one card
The SEO & Search card brings two views together:
- Organic Search — Google Search Console data for the selected period: total clicks, impressions, average position, and your top queries with CTR. If no Search Console property is connected yet, you'll get a one-click connect prompt.
- AI Indexing — the pages AI search / retrieval bots are crawling, a leading indicator of which pages AI is most likely to index and cite.
4. OpenAI ChatGPT Ads: dual-layer pixel + Conversions API
We've also added support for OpenAI ChatGPT Ads — the first provider to need a dual-layer setup:
- Client-side — BuddyStat's tracking script detects OpenAI's measurement pixel (
obs.openaicdn.net/obs-pixel.min.js) and dispatches conversion events towindow.oaiqautomatically. - Server-side (CAPI) — the same events are sent from your server to
POST https://bzr.openai.com/v1/eventswith SHA-256-hashed PII and the__opprefclick-id.
Because the __oppref click-id cookie only exists in the browser, BuddyStat relays it (plus a shared event_id) to the backend, so the browser and server deliveries are deduplicated by OpenAI. Set it up in minutes by adding an OpenAI ChatGPT Ads pixel on the Pixels page with your measurement API key.
Why this matters for your site
AI engines are quickly becoming a top-of-funnel channel — and they behave differently from Google. Here's why the new dashboard changes how you work:
- You can't measure rank positions for AI answers, but you can measure crawls, citations, and referrals. Those are the metrics that actually drive AI-driven growth.
- Spoofed user agents are rampant in bot traffic. ASN verification means you're acting on real AI crawler data, not fake hits.
- Search and AI are converging. Seeing organic clicks next to AI crawls tells you whether your content wins in both engines or just one — a gap that's invisible in traditional analytics.
- ChatGPT Ads is a new paid channel with limited measurement tooling. The dual-layer pixel + CAPI gives you conversion data that the ad platform alone can't reconstruct from the browser.
How to get started
- Open GEO & SEO in your BuddyStat sidebar — no configuration required for crawler and referral data.
- If you haven't already, connect Google Search Console to populate the Organic Search tab.
- For paid AI traffic, add an OpenAI ChatGPT Ads pixel on the Pixels page with your OpenAI measurement API key.
- Watch Pages cited by AI and AI crawls over time over the following weeks to see which content AI engines favor.
See the full GEO & SEO feature guide or the GEO & SEO product page for details.
Key takeaways
- GEO is measurable. AI crawls, LLM referrals, and pages cited by AI are the core metrics of generative engine optimization.
- BuddyStat classifies AI crawlers by bot, provider, and purpose, and verifies them against provider ASNs to filter out spoofed agents.
- Organic and AI visibility live side by side, so you can spot where your content wins in one engine and not the other.
- OpenAI ChatGPT Ads now works through a dual-layer client pixel + server-side CAPI with deduplicated event IDs.
AI engines are a discovery channel you can now see, measure, and optimize — right next to the rest of your analytics.
